Preface
This paper was first written in 1973 for submission as a part of my degree
in History at the University of Leeds. Further work was performed on it
in 1975 in connection with my studies for a Post Graduate Diploma in Library
and Information Studies at the Polytechnic of North London.
My research
was considerably aided by the staff of the Brotherton Library in Leeds,
the staff of the County Records Office in Shrewsbury and the late Mr H
Beaumont of Shrewsbury.
It is recognised that there have been many developments
in the area of historical research in the 25 years since this was first
published. It is hoped, however, that enough of the argument will remain
current to enable this paper to be of interest. The original paper has
been reproduced in its entirety but with a few minor grammatical corrections.
In essence, it is a survey of the published documentation. Further work
on the non-published sources is required to complete the picture.
